Bifold Doors: A Practical Planning Checklist

Short answer: Bifold doors are made of hinged panels that fold as they open. The useful result depends on panel width and weight, hinge and roller adjustment, opening order, stack space, threshold, glass and the condition of the opening.

Draw the panel pairs

Record the finished opening width and height, then divide the layout into the proposed panel pairs. Mark which panel opens first, which direction the pairs fold and where the stack parks. Check furniture, steps, switches and the normal walking route against the parked panels.

For a renovation, inspect the header, sill, floor, wall and fixing substrate. For new construction, coordinate the structural opening and finish interfaces before the frame is released. A small change in floor level can affect the threshold and the clear opening.

Specify the moving system

  1. Panel count, dimensions and approximate weight.
  2. Hinges, rollers, handles, locks and restrictors.
  3. Glass or panel build-up, finish and colour reference.
  4. Top track, bottom guide, threshold and drainage.
  5. Measurement, delivery, installation and final adjustment scope.

Ask for a shop drawing with the closed elevation and plan view of the folded panels. A front image alone cannot show the stack, handle movement or service access.

Compare the complete quote

Provide the same opening schedule and finish direction to each supplier. Compare the clear opening, panel arrangement, glass, hardware, threshold, lead time, packing, delivery, installation and warranty boundary. A cheaper quote may omit survey work or structural preparation.

Before fabrication, freeze the drawing and list unresolved details beside the responsible trade. At delivery, inspect the frame and glass before installation. At handover, operate each pair, check lock engagement, inspect the seals and record how rollers and hinges are adjusted.

Panel pairs should be easy to operate in the order shown on the drawing. If one pair feels heavier or rubs after installation, check the opening, track and hinge adjustment before changing the panel layout. Keep the adjustment instructions with the handover records so maintenance follows the same configuration that was approved.

During commissioning, open and close each pair several times, then check the lock, seals, track and clear passage. Record the adjustment points and cleaning method. A bifold door is a moving assembly; its long-term performance depends on alignment and care as much as on the panel finish.

Frequently asked questions

Are wider panels always better?

No. Wider panels can reduce the number of joints but increase weight, handling and hardware demands. Choose the layout that fits the opening and daily use.

Can bifold doors have a low threshold?

Some systems can, but the threshold must be coordinated with drainage, waterproofing, accessibility and the finished floor.

What causes a pair to rub?

Possible causes include an out-of-square opening, track movement, incorrect adjustment or a damaged roller. Check the complete installation before changing panels.
